Envirothon

The Envirothon is a program for high school students to learn more about our natural environment. The Envirothon tests the student's knowledge on topics such as soils, water resources, forestry, wildlife and current environmental issues.

The Envirothon experience is a unique approach to environmental education. Teams compete in an outdoor setting where they learn that cooperation is needed to achieve success. Participation in this competition can be great fun for both students and their advisors. The activities are designed to help the students become environmentally aware, action-oriented adults.

The Envirothon exists at three levels-Regional (or County), State and National. Each spring, local Envirothons are held in outdoor settings across Kansas. The winning team from each county then goes on to represent it's county at the State Envirothon. The winner of the state competition will represent Kansas at the National Envirothon.

The Envirothon began in Pennsylvania in the spring of 1979. Since, then, it has spread to other states and countries. Kansas held its first Envirothon in 1992 and Riley County has participated with a team every year since then. High school teachers across the country are recognizing the value of the Envirothon as a means of strengthening the environmental awareness of young men and women.

Fun and Excitement are what make the Envirothon. You could have the honor of representing your school, county and state depending on how far you progress in the competition.

Transportation to the county and state events is the only consideration your school will have to make. Food and accommodations to all three events and transportation to the national event are provided by local sponsors.

There are free Envirothon T-Shirts for all participants at State and National Contests and sweatshirts, plaques, ribbons, medals, books, scholarships and much more can be won.
