Tree/Shrub Sales

"Plant a tree now for a shady, cool beautiful tomorrow."

The Riley County Conservation District sells trees in spring and fall as a fundraiser to support conservation education. The trees will be three-gallon potted trees that stand approximately 3 to 6 feet tall. All will be pre-ordered and priced at $15 plus tax. Estimated delivery date is April 1st and October 1st.

Bald Cyprus

Will grow in a variety of soils and does well where soil compaction is a problem. Spread 35 feet. It is one of the few conifers with deciduous leaves.

Bur Oak

85'

Grows on both upland and lowland sites, but does best on rich, moist soils. Spread is also 85 feet. The acorns have a very deep fringed cup, are the largest of all native oaks. Long lived. Drought hardy. Slow growth.

Chinkapin Oak

30-60'

Produces small acorns. Very drought tolerant. Relatively insect and disease free. Spread 20-40 feet. Does not like poorly drained soil. Long lived. Slow-to-moderate growth.

Crabapple - "Prairiefire"

Bright pinkish-red flowers. Young leaves are red-maroon, maturing to deep green. The foliage is completely disease resistant. Full sun and in well-drained areas. Zone: 3-8.
Crabapple - "Robinson"

Fast-growing, round-shaped tree, is resistant to scab, rust, mildew and fireblight. Deep pink to purplish-pink flowers, bronze-green foliage, small red fruit.
Crabapple - "Snowdrift"

Showy white flowers in early sprint. Full sun soils: Sandy, clay, well-drained. Zone: 4-8 Spread is 15-25 feet.

Forsythia
"Lynwood Gold"

Deep golden flowers. More thickly and evenly distributed along stems than other Forsythias. Ordinary to poor soil. Zone: 4-8. Spread 4 feet.

Kentucky Coffee Tree

It is a legume and has large seed pods, and short, heavy twigs make this tree distinctive in winter. Slow-to-moderate growth. Spread is 65 feet.

Pecan

Grows on deep fertile bottomland soils. It tolerates many wet soils even when ponded during spring and overflow periods. Growth is greatly restricted on upland droughty sites. Spread is 90 feet.

Persimmon

Prefers moist, well drained soils, but will adapt to dry soils, infertile sites, pH adaptable, full sun, urban tolerant. Flowers-small whitish bell shaped and blooms in May or June. Fruit is edible and matures in October or November. Hardy zone 4.

Pin Oak

Grows on both upland and lowland soils. The lower branches spread downward, covering a large area. Grows faster than other oak species. Many specimens provide good fall color. Spread is 65 feet.

Purple Smoke Tree

Dramatic, long lasting pinkish-purple, smoke-like airy seed clusters backed by reddish-purple foliage creates a prized small tree or large accent shrub. Foliage holds color all summer, then scarlet in autumn. Full sun.
Red Buckeye

Prefers moist, well drained soils. Full shade to partial shade. Great for hummingbirds. Leaves fall off early fall. Zones: 4-9.

Red Oak

Moderate rate of growth. Deep green leaves become red-orange in fall. Moderately drought tolerant once established. Found on both upland and bottomland soils. Spread is 40-60 feet.

Weeping Mulberry

Small tree with cascading arching branches and large glossy dark green leaves. Grows best in full sun to partial shade. Spread is 15-20 feet.

White Fringetree

Moderate growth rate. White fringelike dropping flowers in May followed by fleshy, bluish-black fruits containing one seed nut. Prefers moist areas. Shade tolerant.

Slow growing rate. Very long lived 300-600 years. Grows on both lowland and upland oils but prefers lowland. Spread is 85 feet.

A fast-growing, pyramidal shaped pine tree. Spread is 30 feet. Needles are soft. Grows best in moist soils.

Tulip Tree (Yellow Popular)

Leaves 4-lobed with a tulip-like appearance. Flowers also tulip-shaped. Rapid growing does best in moderately moist deep, well drained loose textured soils.
